Since its beginnings [selected] has continuously grown and expanded as a collective. To this day they have built a diverse roster of artists from all over Europe and continue to strive and prosper. WAST is the newest addition to the [selected] bunch. The French newcomer has made a lot of noise lately with this unique style of techno, blending the roughest kickdrums and monumental trance synths. His newest EP „Black Demon”, the fifth release on the still young [selected] label, embodies that approach.
Track titles can be misleading sometimes. This is not the case for „Mental Groove” by WAST, the EP’s first track. There couldn’t be a more fitting description to this composition, as the rhythm seems to cast a spell on you. The pumping vocal elevates the insanity and drops you off into madness when the drums hit.
For „Capsize” WAST has joined forces with fellow French madman OMICID. On this one they are taking trance back to its root with a grand breakdown – epic would be an understatement. You can feel the strobelights drifting past your shut eyes as you are standing in a forgotten place, reminiscing about the past, trying to reclaim your sanity. Good luck with that.
The title track hits you with pure wickedness. Again, „Black Demon” seems to be the only appropriate name this single could have. Devilish synths are being carried by an unholy bassline that’s looking for victims. Sinful soundtrack for sinful folk.
For the final track MSKD puts his own spin on the previous banger. His remix of „Black Demon” takes the original’s synth madness and throws it in a blender, creating a mesmerizing yet vigorous arrangement. At this point, there is only one word that truly lives up to this head spinner – unapologetic.
