After a short hiatus the Berlin based collective [selected] are back with the seventh release on their label. To justify the short time of inactivity they return with a bang that’s being heard all over every possible dancefloor. Swiss DJ, producer and label owner The Chronics delivers a five track EP composed of a diverse range of dancefloor stompers. The title „Open Air Romance” is surely not an understatement.
„Techno Sounds Better With You” takes its name and its chord based build-up from a timeless classic, while reimagining it into a jumpy peak time cheese bomb. The heartwarming feel of its tonality and sound scapes set the tone for what will be a night of pure joy and occasional nostalgia.
The ravey character that has just been established by the opener is carried on in the second track as well. „Once Again” is built on ecstatic pads and a mesmerizing synth that as a unit put you in a state of trance that the bouncy rhythms won’t let you escape from.
„Once Again” is put through a remix treatment by Niki Istrefi. The original’s atmosphere is spun around and is turned into an eternal abyss. The aggressive percussion is accompanied by a screeching carpet of noise that puts the final touch on the dystopian composition.
A pumping, acid like synth line, a breakbeat kick drum pattern and catchy vocal chops are the main ingredients of „From The Start”. Don’t let the more playful, almost electro-esque approach fool you, this one is no less powerful and unapologetic than any other track that The Chronics has printed onto the techno surface – and showcases his eclectic style.
Hermeth puts the final touch on this record by remixing „From The Start”. Classic rave stabs are leading into what has to be one of the most crowd pleasing bassline drops you will hear in any night out. A sudden break, started by a soothing pad, takes you on a trip through fields of sunflowers and mesmerizing melodies, before releasing you back into the saturated breakbeat battle field. A deserving finish and appropriate closer to „Open Air Romance”.
